Program Information/Mission

The mission of Practical Nursing Program is to provide theory, laboratory, and clinical experiences to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to transition the student nurse into the licensed practical nurse role. The nursing program is committed to high educational standards based on quality and safety, and best practices in nursing to prepare graduates for a successful professional nursing career as a Licensed Practical Nurse. 
 

Admission to Program

  • Current high school senior or high school graduate with minimum high school GPA 2.7, or 6 credit hours of college-level courses with minimum overall GPA 2.0 or higher

    OR

  • Current college/ICC student with minimum overall college GPA of 2.0 or higher

    AND

  • Verify Illinois Department of Public Health Registry as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA

Additional requirements after program acceptance:

  • Complete drug screen, criminal background check, physical examination and immunizations 

  • Complete Healthcare Provider CPR certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or American Red Cross (ARC) BLS attained and keep it current throughout program 

  • Complete HESI A2 PN Admission Assessment 

  • Participate in scheduled program registration and orientation sessions 

  • Maintain minimum GPA 2.0 and earn GPA 2.0 or higher in all courses required within program

    Recommendations:

  • High school courses: two years of Anatomy and Physiology and Algebra

  • Before application, schedule an appointment with college health careers student success advisor for help enrolling in required courses

  • Required general education courses from program sequence may be completed with grade C or higher, prior to acceptance/admission into program

Accreditation Information

Graduates are eligible to take the National Council State Board of Nursing (NCSBN) Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) and may apply for licensure to practice nursing as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Additional Program Information

Transfer of comparable credit from other institutions may be evaluated and accepted toward meeting requirements of ICC Nursing Program's general education courses. Transfer credit is not automatically accepted for occupational or vocational "program courses"; demonstration of proficiency or competency is required. Credit is not given for work experience. 

To Remain in and Graduate from the Program

To progress in the program and graduate, a student must earn a grade of C or better in all required general education courses and nursing program courses.

A student who has (a) received a grade lower than C in the first semester nursing course PRNRS 110, or (b) received an unsatisfactory grade in the PRNRS 110 clinical and or lab component, or who has (c) withdrawn, will need to reapply for admission to the program. 

A student who has successfully completed PRNRS 110 and who has (a) received a grade lower than C in PRNRS 111 or PRNRS 112, or (b) received an unsatisfactory grade in the PRNRS 111 or PRNRS 112 clinical and or lab component, or who has (c) withdrawn, will need to meet readmission eligibility requirements of the nursing program and will be required to retake the course.

A student may be readmitted to the program only once and may repeat a nursing course only one time.
