Interpreter Preparation

GOAL 1 Students will demonstrate proficiency in American Sign Language.

1. Accurately use essential ASL sentence types in language interactions and interpretations.

2. Accurately incorporate noon-manual markers (NMMs) in ASL communication and interpretations.

3. Accurately incorporate use of specialized ASL vocabulary into linguistic interactions.

4. Accurately produce ASL fingerspelling and numbers within linguistic interactions.

GOAL 2 Students will demonstrate knowledge of American Deaf Culture.

1. Identify current norms of American Deaf culture.

2. Identify varied perspectives of Deafness.

3. Demonstrate awareness of current issues in American Deaf culture.

GOAL 3 Students will formulate effective interpretations with message and dynamic equivalence.

1. Produce accurate unrehearsed expressive interpretations at 110- 120 words per minute.

2. Produce accurate unrehearsed receptive interpretations for diverse ASL users.

GOAL 4 Students will implement career preparation strategies.

1. Accurately delineate the steps to achieve interpreter certification and licensure in Illinois.

2. Complete an interpreting internship.

3. Produce an employment-ready internship portfolio.

GOAL 5 Students will pass a professional certification examination or obtain a career credential.
